로마서 2장 5절부터 11절까지 한 문장!

지난 주 로마서 말씀의 핵심은 1절에서 11절까지를 하나로 이해해야 그 본 뜻이 보인다는 것으로 이해했습니다. 특히 5절과 6절을 원문처럼 관계사로 연결시켜서 한 문장으로 번역했더라면 이런 뜻을 좀 더 쉽게 깨달을 수 있을텐데라는 생각이 들었습니다. 우리나라 번역본뿐만 아니라 대부분의 영어번역본도 5절과 6절을 끊어서 번역하고 있습니다. 원문을 아는 사람이라면 의미에는 차이 없이 쉽게 읽기 쉽게 문장을 잘랐다고 생각하겠지만, 독자는 문장이 끊어지면서 다른 이야기가 전개된다고 생각하게 됩니다. 영어성경 중에서는 3개 번역본이 관계사를 이용해 한 문장으로 번역했습니다. 그런데 그 중에서도 약간씩 차이가 있었습니다.

대표적 직역성경인 NASB는 5-8절을 한 문장으로, 킹제인스 번역본(KJV)을 현대적으로 개정한 NKJV은 5-10절을 한 문장으로, KJV은 5-11절을 한 문장으로 번역했습니다. 물론 원문에는 문장 부호가 없으니 후세에 어디까지를 한 문장으로 볼 것인지 다를 수 있지만 5-11절까지를 하나로 보는 것이 전통적인 번역 (KJV)이었고 직역성경은 아직도 그것을 살리고 있는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 다른 현대 번역본은 가독성을 좋게 하기 위해 문장을 많이 끊은 것으로 생각됩니다 (NIV는 5-11절을 6문장, 개역개정과 새번역은 4문장 으로 나눔).

말씀은 그 구조가 참으로 완전해서 그 형태를 조금 변경하는 것만으로도 의미가 왜곡될 수 있다는 생각이 드니 소름이 끼칩니다.

그리고 한 문장으로 번역한 영문성경을 보고도 수많은 신학자와 목사님들이 깨닫지 못하던 것을 깨닫게 하시는 하나님의 은혜가 놀랍고 감사합니다. 앞으로의 로마서 말씀이 더욱더 기대되네요.
